Much has been written about the intelligence failures or outright lies that brought us into Iraq. Most of that can be traced to Ahmed Chalabi who with his Iraq National Congress was feeding faulty if not flat out wrong information to the Americans. Unfortunately it seems that Bush, Cheney, and others were more than happy to use this in the build up to the Iraq war. Chalabi was the source of the infamous informant Curveball whose information was spotty to say the least but still with the concerns expressed by some in Intelligence communities all over his information was taken as gospel. Some have written that maybe Chalabi was working for Iran or he was positioning himself to be the new leader of an Iraq post Saddam, we may never know.
In later interviews he acknowledged some of the mistakes of the post war leadership including the deBaathification which may have led to the creation of ISIS and led to more sectarian violence in an already violent situation.
He was found dead today in his home in Baghdad, he was 71.
Here is an article from todays Washington Post on his life.
