A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
Have you ever celebrated a holiday early?
It’s been a tradition that Brian and I celebrate Thanksgiving with our dearly loved friend, John. When we found out he had to work over the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, we weren’t going to let that deter us from celebrating together. That is how Thanksgiving came to our house early this year.
John arrived on Friday afternoon and we spent the day riveted to the horror unfolding in Paris. It would color the holiday in unexpected ways. We woke early yesterday morning and spent the day discussing the tragedy. As with so many Thanksgiving Day discussions, it led to a spirited debate of world politics. The fact that we are all on the same page politically spared the day falling into an argument one might have with their rabid right wing brother-in-law. It was a productive discussion.
It was also a sunny and crisp day and it got dark far too soon and we had a feast to stage. The fridge was full with the spoils bought for a carefully planned menu, in an uncrowded grocery store I might add. The dogs sensed that the ordinary had become the extraordinary and barked and bounced themselves off the walls. We Wii bowled. The only thing missing was the Macy’s Day parade and it wasn’t missed all that much. In every aspect, it felt like Thanksgiving.
Brian is a cook. When I say that, I mean to tell you that he is brilliant in a kitchen. He woke up with the roosters and went to work on his menu. It was a traditional Thanksgiving feast, kicked up a notch with the help of Julia Child, Emily Lucchetti and a lovely recipe found in Bon Appetite magazine.
Menu
Potage Crème aux Oignons, Soubise
Roasted Turkey
Mashed Potatoes
Cranberry Sauce with Orange Flower Water
Haricot Vert in Roasted Tomato and Almond Pesto
Seasoned Bread Stuffing with Sage Pork Sausage and Prunes
Stock Reduced Gravy
Walnut Rum Pudding
Good Wine and Lots of It
It was a memorable Thanksgiving and will probably go down as one of our favorites ever. It was liberating, stress free and serendipitous. It was also a reminder that Thanksgiving Day doesn’t just have to be held on the fourth Thursday of November. With that terrible reminder recently in Paris demonstrating how fleeting and cruel life can be, being thankful for life is something that shouldn’t be limited to one day in November. Be together and celebrate whenever the opportunity to have a feast presents itself. You can even call it Thanksgiving if you want to.
What are you thankful for today?

SFKossacks March and Attend Rally on Climate Change and COP21
"People across Northern California are determined to voice their demand that the U.S. government do the right thing at the COP21 talks beginning in Paris later this month. "COP21" is the 21st annual meeting of the 'Conference of Parties' under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Since early summer I've been working with a diverse coalition of labor, social justice, environmental, and faith groups under an umbrella we call the Northern California Climate Mobilization. We're organizing a march and rally in Oakland, California on Saturday November 21st, and we're expecting a tremendous crowd.
