It has been a busy DIY weekend here at Casa Brillig… so grab a latte, hot cocoa, tea, or other beverage and follow me below the dingledoodle Story Break, after a word from our sponsor…
We’ve had the chairs in our kitchen for quite a few years. They’re from IKEA and we got the first three 12 years ago, and the fourth 6 years ago shortly before K2 arrived. They’re called (because everything at IKEA has a cool Swedish name) HENRIKSDAL and somewhere between the first three and the fourth, IKEA redesigned them… the new one had a larger seat and back, meaning current seat covers don’t fit them AND there was much jockeying to be the one to sit in the Big Chair, which eventually became Mr. Brillig’s Chair (not because he’s BIG, mind you, but it put an end to discussion fast when Daddy Said It Was His :-). And after all those years, we finally managed to rip out the seat covers beyond repair. But that’s OK because we also need other stuff and can now justify a trip to IKEA!!
Four hours later, we arrive home still full from the ritual meatballs with lingonberry jam lunch, walk through the showroom coveting all the things, and then buying what we came for plus whatever else seemed to find its way into our cart. We purchased, among many things small and great, a rug for our foyer and three new chairs (which thankfully hadn’t changed dimensions in the intervening years) plus four seat covers.
Fast forward to today, when I opened the first box, assembled the chair using the handy IKEA ‘No Words Just Pictures And Fun Icons’ instruction manual, flipped it over, and…
Discovered it was four inches too tall. We needed the SHORTER style.
We also learned that our foyer is exactly thiiiiiiis much too small for the rug we bought. So in a driving rainstorm that the Universe decided to inflict on us because of course it’s 57F and raining in January in Boston, Mr. Brillig and I drove the weather-induced hour long drive back to IKEA to return stuff, have a few more meatballs, and get the correct 26” tall chairs and 7’ long rug. Assembly happened, and they look wonderful. But it’s amazing what a difference a mere four inches can be. And I look forward to my coffee tomorrow sitting in one of those chairs!
Enough about my adventures with wrench and screwdriver, let’s get to what you really come here for… the Top Comments, Top Mojo, and Top Pictures!!
TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From BentLiberal:
mahakali overdrive can hardly believe what's happened but tries to explain it in this comment.
From Puddytat:
Nominating this hysterically funny thread between Elizaveta and The Marti who vie to be "adopted" by diarist Steven Payne when he "wins" the Powerball Jackpot (no, sadly, he didn't). The thread keeps going until it becomes a photo "war". It's LOLalicious!
From HedwigKos:
Rugbymom put the mechanism of the Republicans in the clearest terms and the fewest words when she commented on Trump's strategy in Hunter's diary critiqueing Michael Gerson. Right in the middle of the comment -- please read it in its entirety -- she sets up then places this jewel: "The hatred is the cover for the looting operation." Absolutely spot on.
