The New Jim Crow is a progressive must read if you truly want to understand the racial caste system we have implemented in this country. The hard truths are numerous and pummeling.
And it sounds like the author, Michelle Alexander may soon come out swinging for Bernie. Yuge.

UPDATE:
From the South Carolina debate. “Why do black people still like Hillary Clinton?” Killer Mike on ‘The New Jim Crow’ at 5:00.
Watch Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s face drop after she sees the book cover.
Recall the 2008 primary,
The dog whistles and race baiting employed by two democrats, two southern democrats in 2008, was enough to disgust President Carter. President Carter, who lived through the Civil Rights era in… Georgia.
The media assumption that Clinton would hold onto black support in the South, South Carolina specifically (“We can all be proud of Barack Obama”?), isn’t all that surprising. As early as the late spring and early summer media outlets from NPR to The NYT have been breathlessly highlighting Bernie’s lack of support here.
Bernie Sanders a Virtual Unknown Among Black Voters
Mind you the above was published in June, when he was a virtual unknown nationally with all voters.
Clinton surrogates have been pounding at Bernie’s supposed lack of ability to connect since day one. I think everyone now knows Vermont is exactly 98% white and never mind that Brooklyn accent. It’s clearly driven by the fear of Bernie’s background: marching with MLK, organizing with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, arrested for protesting segregated housing in Chicago, helping Jesse Jackson to win Vermont.

I understand some Clinton fans may be sensitive to that sort of thing. Remember Sistah Souljah? I wonder how she feels about Hillary’s latest run for the most powerful person on earth?
“She reminds me too much of the slave plantation white wife of the white ‘master,’ ” Souljah said, according to Time.
“She talks down to people [and] is condescending and pandering,” she said of the Democratic presidential front-runner.
“She even talked down to the commander in chief, President Barack Obama, while she was under his command,” Souljah added, referencing Clinton’s tenure as secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.

And from the Times article above,
As for Mr. Sanders, he said, “I’m not hearing Bernie Sanders’s name at the barbershops.”
You did notice the backdrop for the Killer Mike interview? That’s his barbershop.

“Sanders was one of the only people at that time that stood on the floor and said this is going to disproportionately affect black people.”
