Nothing fancy here, folks. No political adventures or pie-fight material. Just a simple video using science and technology to demonstrate one of nature’s wonders — the flight of the northern goshawk, and not just in open sky like the picture above.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let
people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
We have split up the publishing duties, but we welcome everyone in IAN to do daily diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news! If you would like to write a diary, let us know in a comment. Ok, we have a current diary schedule. If you would like to fill in, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMom a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FSNMom is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.
Monday: Crimson Quillfeather Tuesday: ejoanna Wednesday: Caedy
Thursday: art ah zen Friday: FloridaSNMOM Saturday: jan4insight Sunday: loggersbrat
The idea was to get a good look at how a largish bird like a goshawk can maneuver through the dense forest habitat that’s part of their home. This video is admittedly several years old (it was posted in 2011) but I just came across it a few days ago. And I thought, Hmmm — I could share that with the IAN folks! Enjoy.
For those who can’t or don’t want to watch the whole video, I took a few screenshots to share these stills with you. Notice how Ellie, the cooperative goshawk, reaches forward with her legs to help move through the small space, which simulates the spacing between trees:
Good job, Ellie! I hope you got a tasty snack in reward for your hard work :)
Folks — I need to cut back on my Itzl diarying. When I took on the Saturday slot at the beginning of December, I said I could do it until I got another writing gig. Unfortunately, I haven’t got a serious gig at this time, but I really need to get serious about getting one. Funds are running low and I need the income. I’d be willing to write the diary every other Saturday, or do fill-in diaries if someone can’t keep their date (with advance notice, if possible). But I need to step back from the every-week schedule. So if you’d like to give it a try, make your thoughts known in the comments or by Kosmail. Thank you!
