A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
Do You Hate the Gas Company ?
You might say, “How can you hate the Gas Company?” To which I answer, “How can you not hate the Gas Company ?” I hate the bastards with every fiber of my being. This is not an irrational hatred, oh no. It is not bigotry. I am not a gassist or a gassophobe. I hate the Gas Company for a very good reason: They’re Assholes! I was reading a novel once, I can’t remember which one. It was set in England, around the turn of the century, I think. Do you know what the Gas Company did there ? They put coin-op gas rings in people’s apartments. That’s right, if you wanted to cook or make a pot of tea you had to keep dropping coins in the slot until your soup was done. And if you ran out of change … the heartless bastards.
It’s cold outside right now. I don’t know how cold, it’s too cold to go out and look at the thermometer. I’ve got the heater on, to take the chill off the house. I wish I had the energy to split some wood and make a morning fire, but I don’t. Around the corner, on the side of the house, is their damned meter, its demonic dial spinning madly as it adds up the coins that I will eventually have to send to the Gas Company. I know their meter lies. Do you know what the bastards did to me, in 1983, or was it ‘84 ? I’ll tell you what they did. I can never forget, could you ? They sent me a second bill. Yes, it’s true, two bills in one month. I paid the SOBs, sent them their pound of flesh, paid in full, to the penny. They sent me a second bill. “Mr. Zello,” it said, “we regret an error in billing, you owe us $3.47 more on last month’s bill.”
Can you believe that shit! They made a mistake in their billing and wanted me to make up for it. Incredible. Suppose you’re a small business, and not a greedy monopoly. Suppose you run a pizza parlor. A customer comes in and orders a pizza. You give him his pie, take his money and wish him a nice day. Later, going over the day’s receipts, you discover that you forgot to charge the customer $1.50 for the extra cheese. Would you ever, in a thousand years, have the gall to write that customer a letter explaining that you neglected to charge him for an extra topping and would he please send you a check for $1.50 plus tax ? No. Of course not. You would never do such a thing because you’re not an Evil, Blood-Sucking Monopoly. Why does the Gas Company do it ? Because they can.
OK, rant over. What do y’all got for me this morning ? Anything interesting from the world-wide web, any news from your local group (I’m looking at you Iowa) and …
Do You Hate the Gas Company ?
