Finding a solution for deep snow clogging tracks has long been a major problem for railroads. The earliest solutions were some of the best. Most railroad snowplows can move fast, blasting snow off rails at high speed. But, what happens when the snow is more than five to eight feet deep? That does not happen as often as one might think, but rail traffic must get through, carrying mail, perishable goods and people. Rotary snowplows were the solution when snow gets too deep for blades that shovel snow off the tracks. This is their story:
Our CelticLassie loved being able to climb all over a rotary plow in Alaska, including touring the operator’s cab. She wanted to come back in winter so she could see it operating, and maybe get a ride on the “dragon.”
