The civil rights activist filed at the last minute as a candidate for Mayor of Baltimore. There are 28 other candidates for that office.
Mckesson, 30, a Baltimore native and former public school administrator here, is part of a team called Campaign Zero, which seeks to end police killings in America. Mckesson, a Democrat, has gained widespread attention in the protest movement that began in Ferguson, Missouri. He has nearly 300,000 followers on Twitter.
The group wants end so-called "broken windows" policing, increase community oversight of police and limit use-of-force, among other goals. African-Americans are much more likely to be killed by police than whites.
Mckesson's filing — which came just minutes before Wednesday's 9 p.m. deadline to get in the primary race — is sure to shake up a crowded field for Baltimore mayor. The field of 28 includes 13 Democrats, four Republicans, three Green Party members and a Libertarian.
