Sanders says he ‘doesn’t want that crap’ when the BernieBros phenomena is mentioned to him. He gets it. Now it’s time for the rest of us to as well.
I realize there’s already a diary on the Rec list about this by First Amendment, a very good one, but it has been mostly diary-jacked by people denying that this problem even exists. Denying that they’re actually Bernie supporters doing it. Brushing it off as ‘well there are jerks on the internet? oh me oh my’. But the truth of the matter is we have a responsibility, no even moreso an opportunity here to distance ourselves as supporters and a community from these nefarious people.
So please, don’t flag the diary for use of the term that has entered the common vernacular. Don’t flag people who call out what is really going on. It’s on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, 4chan, it’s even happening in person. Respectable people are being boo’ed or called liars at campaign events. These are documented incidents. If you’re going to demand proof from me don’t bother, I’m going to respect those who are bringing the issue to light. This is not a conspiracy. This is really happening.
And we should all heed the words of Senator Sanders himself and put a stop to it, call it out, own up to it, disarm it, destroy it, ridicule and mock it when we see it. Tell them they’re wrong. Allow people to support who they chose to. That’s what democracy is really all about in the end anyway, is it not? That we’re free to support whom we like and to voice our opinions in reasonable discourse? I’ll not disparage a single Hillary supporter. Good for them. If we somehow prevail (and good lord, fellow Bernie supporters, are we ever becoming overconfident) we will need every one of them. So remember they are our friends in the end once this primary is over, and treat them kindly in the meantime while we have this battle of ideas.
