So, a Clintonite posted an article on Twitter that purportedly is the smoking gun to Bernie Sanders’ “lies” that he always supported same sex marriage. The document is from 1982. It was a resolution in support of the institution of marriage. It mentions the union of a husband and wife. Since that language is somewhat reminiscent of the anti-equality arguments today, the Clinton supporter thought they had a smoking gun.
Aha! Bernie was anti-same sex marriage. The problem, I tried to point out, is that the document doesn’t mention anything about same sex marriage. And that shouldn’t be surprising. In 1982, hardly anyone, even within the gay community was discussing marriage equality. Instead, the document is largely a symbolic document celebrating marriage at a time when many were concerned about the rising rates of divorce, and out-of-wedlock births. It is, instead of an opposition to same sex marriage, as the Clintonites tried to portray it, a reaffirmation of society’s preference for marriage.
As I argued this point, my opponent became frustrated with me and decided to attack my looks, specifically my longish hair, which purportedly is unflattering. Then, after he blocked me, apparently in reponse to my retort, one of his associates then jumped in, further insulting my hair (I get it its long, and you are from the 1950s or something). If that was not enough, his associate decided to go homophobic on me.
Here’s are the tweets:
