A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
Nothing much going on in the grey matter now; no questions of cosmic significance to ask of the motley crew of CUAers here...nothing more than a few fleeting thoughts that mean everything and nothing at all.
1) Is it just me or does it seem like the Super Bowl has gotten longer and longer every year?
I’ve watched every Super Bowl since Super Bowl XII. The pre-game shows seem far longer, the commercials too ostentatious to be enjoyable, halftimes have become more extravaganza-nistic...and it seems about everything BUT the actual game.
Which might not have been a bad thing this year because the game, itself, was dreadfully dull (unlike the last few Super Bowls)...and I still can’t stand that 4-time-loser to the Florida Gators, Peyton Manning (and that butt-whooping that the Seattle Seahawks administered to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII was completely enjoyable).
2) The rec list here at DK is truly wrecked with Bernie-Hillary drama. I’ve gotten to the point where, on one hand, I could care less, on the other hand, I have been getting a perverse desire out of the wreckage of the present and I’ve even been willing to throw a few pies myself on various sides.
The truth is (and I’ve stated this several times) that I am not impressed with either of the remaining Democratic candidates and...yeah, I am a little frustrated about that (I felt exactly the opposite in 2008).
Frustrated to the extent that it seems like getting my passport and getting my shit together increasingly seems like a good idea.
3) After the past couple of winters of brutally typical “Chicago” cold, this winter here in the Windy City has been rather mild. Truth be told, these relatively mild winters have become the rule rather than the exception for the past 10 years or so.
I’m of two minds about this.
Yes, I do enjoy these mild winters where I don’t have to wear 3-5 layers of clothing.
On the other hand, I found myself waxing nostalgic frequently during the winters of 2013-14 and 2014-15 because they reminded me of the winters from my childhood. In those good ol’ days, you could count on frigid temperatures and wind chills below zero for two weeks at a time as opposed to a day or two at a time.
4) I just picked up a copy of Maria Fairweather’s biography of Madame de Stäel. Since revolution seems to be all the talk nowadays, I actually can’t wait to read it. But there are quite a few books for me to read before I get to it and I don’t think that I am so interested in reading it that it should jump ahead of other stuff.
