A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
Got a Favorite Airline?
I probably fly on average 3-4 times per year, so I’m not what one would consider a frequent flyer. However, I have flown on quite a range of passenger planes and definitely have my favorites and least favorites. My favorite domestic carrier has to be Southwest Airlines. Fortunately, they have a lot of flights that go in and out of my closest airport, Oakland International.
I like Southwest’s egalitarian boarding system. You aren’t preassigned seats but rather board the plane on a first-come first-serve basis, depending on the time you check in. I have always found their staff to be well-trained, professional and courteous. They have never lost my luggage and they do a pretty good job of keeping on schedule.
For international carriers, I have a couple of favorites. I have always loved flying KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Again, great reputation especially for the safety of their fleet, great customer service and the flight attendants dote on me because I am that rare American who speaks Dutch. It blows them away.
I also love Virgin Atlantic, mostly due to my inaugural experience on their flight. That took place on the airline’s inaugural return flight from San Francisco back to London on May 14, 1994. Virgin had just opened up their first direct flight from LHR to SFO a couple of days before. They were selling deeply discounted promotional tickets and I was buying at the right time.
I remember the plane to be very nice and only about half full. I had a three-seat row all to myself. Now that’s fancy. After we reached flying altitude, the pilot began his in-flight announcements. When he finally got all the usual pilot spiel out of his system, he then announced that Richard Branson was on board the flight and we would be given complimentary Veuve Clicquot champagne for the next three hours. That was about the time we heard people further forward in this huge plane losing their shit. Branson was coming through the cabin, personally welcoming everyone aboard. I got to shake his hand and received a warm smile when I thanked him for the lift.
Question: What’s your favorite airline?

Event Reporting
Saturday, February 13, 2016, the readers of Daily Kos in North Carolina joined thousands in the 10th Annual Mass Moral March on Raleigh & HKonJ People’s Assembly GET-OUT-THE-VOTE GATHERING AND MOBILIZATION action. Our readers braved 27 degree weather! There were two diaries about it: The march the trolls couldn't stop: NC-NAACP's Moral March on Raleigh, 13 Feb 2016 by DocDawg and North Carolina Open Thread: Marching and Connecting by randallt.
Here’s one photo of many provided by both diarists:
The marvelous NYC Kossacks got together to welcome front pager, Laura Clawson, to NYC. And what a fantastic job they did. Look at all the people who showed up! Full report here.
nhox42 organized and reports details about a recent meet-up in Maine along with food pr0n! Cheers and Jeers/NE Kossacks Midwinter Meetup Success!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries about your event or if you have changes or additions.
