The structure of the train bridge on Route 29, adjacent to “The Columbia Station” just before Produce Junction in Phoenixville is in terrible shape. I’m no engineer, but when you build steel beams to support the trains that roll overhead day in and day out, you usually put them there for a reason. Above is a picture of one of several completely corroded steel beams.
The township and Amtrack (*edit Amtrak does not own this bridge, Norfolk Southern seems to) have had no reply to requests for comment on the structural stability of this bridge.
I am writing this article (with petition attached) to demand that Norfolk Southern and the Borough Council of Phoenixville to immediately order a structural inspection of this bridge to determine whether it is structurally sound enough to protect the thousands of people who drive and run under it every day.
