Bernie Sanders has promised to start a revolution, but in truth the revolution has already begun. It started at least in 2008 when we elected Barack Hussein Obama President of the United States. He won even though a majority of people over 45 years old voted AGAINST him. How? Because a majority of people under 45 voted FOR him, especially those under 30 – 66% of them voted for Obama! The good news is that bitter old white guys my age and older are dying and are being replaced by young people who do not follow their parents’ narrow-minded view of the world. The revolution Bernie promises is already here!
The revolution not only elected our first African American President, it also led to marriage equality and greater recognition of LBGTQ rights - changes that could not have been imagined just a decade ago. The revolution led to Occupy Wall Street and other Occupy movements which themselves started a political awakening throughout the country. Young people brought this revolution to America.
Young people are also at the heart of the push for alternative energy and for action against global warming. The oil company propaganda against the existence of global warming worked on their parents, but not on them. Young people are also changing sexual mores and demanding that they have the information they need in order to make responsible choices. They are bringing down pregnancy rates and abortion rates among young adults and teens. And they are demanding equal treatment for women in all aspects of life – even the military. And while these young people want to see a woman President, they aren’t going to vote for a woman just because she’s a woman or just because another woman tells them to.
Young people are also rapidly moving away from the religious dogma that has been central in so many lives of older Americans. Young people care about economic and social justice, they don’t give a damn about organized religion and religious dogma.
And most recently, young people are the moving force behind “Black Lives Matter”. They are the ones recording stops, arrests and shootings of African Americans by police. They are the ones recording children being thrown around and beaten by police in our schools. They have brought into everyone’s consciousness what African Americans face every day.
The revolution is here. We can give it a tremendous boost by choosing Bernie Sanders as the Democratic candidate for President and by electing him President in November. On the other hand, if Hillary Clinton were the Democratic candidate for President, that wouldn’t stop the movement – it is not stoppable - but it would slow it down. It would be the last gasp of a dying generation desperate to still feel relevant. On Tuesday, April 19, you can either vote on the side of history and on the side of progress, or you can vote on the side of that last gasp, that last dying breadth of an old and rejected view of the world.
Vote with HISTORY! Vote to continue the REVOLUTION! Vote for BERNIE SANDERS!!
