Congress members wear so many hats. Sometimes they’re passing laws to satisfy their big donors, sometimes they’re back at home pretending to listen to constituents before going back to pass laws to satisfy their big donors, and sometimes they’re directly working for their big donors.
Now, this is not an attack on the Front Pager. That individual is a really gifted writer and a tremendous asset to this community and I wish he would write more. Especially his science pieces.
But it is amazing. A Republican does it and it is absolutely clear that money corrupts. Scalise does the bidding of his big donors. Why? Because they are big donors. Duh! Do I need to point out obvious?
But when it comes to Hillary Clinton, pointing out the obvious — that she is bought and paid for, that she represents her contributors not the man on the street! Horrors! You must be a right wing infiltrator or worst yet: a pie-in-the-sky-unicorn-analingus-performing-purist.
Breathlessly Clinton supporters demand: where is the quid-pro-quo? Respond with factual incidents reported by non-rightwing sources, be dismissed or insulted.
This is called cognitive dissonance. The inability to examine and analyze the behavior of your chosen candidate critically. The funny thing is, for many Clinton supporters this goes hand in hand with projection: you think Bernie is a saint!!
Well, no, most of us don’t. For me Bernie is a horrible disappointment on gun control. I really am disappointed with his stand there. However, I have made a judgement call as a voter that his stands on addressing Climate Change, income inequality, racial injustice, the fact that his pro-choice stand is rooted in recognition of women’s autonomy over their own bodies and universal healthcare (hey, I guess if I get shot, at least I’m covered? Right?) all outweigh the issue I disagree with him on.
But Hillary, Blessed Mother of Chelsea, could NEVER be influenced by money!! It’s obscene to think that could be possible!
I know many (not all, certainly some Clinton supporters are wonderful and aware of the drawbacks of their candidate) of you are able to acknowledge this double standard. But maybe, since Republicans won’t have any qualms about using her unfavorables against her, it’s worth considering that even someone as smart as Hillary Clinton can be corrupted by obscene wealth?
