Ideally this would be a moment for somber reflection for all parties involved in this tragedy. Unfortunately Stephen S. Loomis, President of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association did not get the message. He immediately released a memo that stated in part:
We can only hope the Rice and their attorneys will use a portion of this settlement to help educate the youth of Cleveland in the dangers associated with the mishandling of both real and facsimile firearms. Something positive must come from this tragic loss. That would be educating the youth of the dangers of possessing a real or replica firearm.
Well there you have it folks. White men brandishing assault rifles?
Perfectly okay.
Twelve year old black boy playing with a water pistol?
HE HAD IT COMING!
I have this crazy idea. How about instead of training preteenagers to fear for their lives from cops we instead teach cops not to shoot people dead in under two seconds. While we are at it let’s also deduct all future damages incurred by police misconduct from their salaries and pensions. I doubt that the cops will be quite so cavalier when they realize that they and their buddies would be on the hook for several million dollars every time they screw up. I don’t understand why the taxpayer has to bail them out every time a cop with an itchy trigger finger blows someone away without even thinking twice.
