A couple of months ago we all smiled at the footage of 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin meeting and dancing with the president and the first lady. It was her dream to go to the White House and meet the Obamas, and as a part of Black History Month, the White House made that dream come true. The good news is that Virginia McLaurin just turned 107! The bad news is that she doesn’t have a photo ID! The good news again—she doesn’t live in an idiot-run state with restrictive voter ID laws.
According to columnist Courtland Milloy, in order for Virginia McLaurin to get her D.C. nondriver’s license as photo ID, she needs a copy of her birth certificate from South Carolina, where she was born. However, in order to get that birth certificate, she needs a photo ID. McLaurin is basically caught in a never-ending bureaucratic cycle.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get that face card,” McLaurin told Milloy. “I was birthed by a midwife and the birthday put in a Bible somewhere. I don’t know if they even had birth certificates back then.”
How does she feel about her situation?
Moreover, she seemed more upset about people being denied the right to vote because of voter ID laws than about not being able to get a photo ID for herself.
