Senator Bernie Sanders is, perhaps, the most principled politician in my lifetime, and in my humble opinion, stands on equal footing with Adlai Stevenson and Jimmy Carter. Quite naturally, Bernie Sanders has attracted the most principled of supporters, and in many respects, has become the “conscience” of the Democratic Party. But is looking like Bernie might not be able to get the ball over the goal line before time runs out. Primary politics is an ugly process — just look across the aisle.
My proudest day as a Democrat was November 4, 2008. I am feeling that pride once again knowing that this Party has two highly-qualified, well-tempered contenders for the presidential nomination. One, Hillary Clinton, is the most highly-experienced presidential candidate in nearly 30 years. The other, Bernie Sanders, upholds the Progressive and humanistic values and principles that appeal most to Democrats like me. Two bad we can’t hybridize the two….
In order to defeat Republicans in November, it will be essential to unite Democratic voters, and muster the greatest turn-out in history. Regardless of the nominee, as a party, we must call on everyone to step up to the plate. Republicans always count on low Democratic turn-out and will do everything possible to suppress participation by minorities, students, and the poor. Why should we help them? I am most troubled by comments from some Bernie supporters who have been adamant in their refusal to support Hillary, should she get the nomination. Not only will they be helping to elect Donald Trump, but more importantly, they may be making it extra difficult for the next non-establishment, truly-Progressive Democrat to have a fighting chance.
