It’s been a cool, rainy week. It poured on Wednesday, and at the PADS interim housing site in Carol Stream, the rain beat patterns on the metal roof.
I slept better that night than I have since before I became homeless.
Thursday started the Lisle Library Book Sale. They always have a couple of shelves of withdrawn books for sale, and I’ve been reading Reclaiming History (Vincent Bugliosi’s book about the JFK Assassination) for several weeks, after purchasing it for $3.50.
The first day of the sale, I bought 2 “Murder, She Wrote” paperbacks, and 2 hardcovers for $1.50 each. I read the first that day. I loved the title: My Heart May Be Broken, But My Hair Still Looks Great, and it was a fun read (especially after spending nearly a month getting through about 1/3 of the JFK book’s 1400 or whatever pages.) How come I finish the fun books in a day, and the not-fun, but interesting books take forever?
The second hardcover was The Saints and Sinners of Okay County, which wasn’t as fun as the first, but still had interesting characters (and a blurb of recommendation by Fannie Flagg. Could there be a better recommendation?)
I was finishing that up last night, at the Wood Dale Interim Housing site. It was tough, because my GOSH the volunteers were LOUD. It was like they were having a class reunion or something. They were partying away until lights out — and things didn’t get much quieter after that. I was awake until after 1 am… and then between 5 and 6, the fire alarm started going off every 10 minutes or so, as they heated up breakfast.
I got four more hardcovers yesterday — Fannie Flagg’s The All-Girls Filling Station Last Reunion (which I’ve all ready read once, so I’ll hold that for last). Also, Finding Jack by Gareth Crocker (yep, it’s about a dog… the book I started this morning.) And Chop Chop by Simon Wroe. I forget what the fourth book is.
Fortunately, after filling my gas tank this morning, I was intelligent enough to leave my little bit of cash out in the car, rather than bringing it along with me into the library!
Tonight’s interim housing site is in Medinah (our last night there until next fall, sadly...), and I’m hoping for a great night’s sleep, there.
Have a terrific day!
