This is Part 2 of a visit to the Philadelphia Zoo. Here is Part I where we looked at the reptiles and birds. In Part 2 we now visit the Primate, Big Cat, and Small Mammal exhibits.
THE DAILY BUCKET IS A REGULAR FEATURE OF THE BACKYARD SCIENCE GROUP. IT IS A PLACE TO NOTE ANY OBSERVATIONS YOU HAVE MADE OF THE WORLD AROUND YOU. INSECTS, WEATHER, METEORITES, CLIMATE, BIRDS AND/OR FLOWERS. ALL ARE WORTHY ADDITIONS TO THE BUCKET. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU IN A COMMENT. INCLUDE, AS CLOSE AS IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU, WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED. EACH NOTE IS A RECORD THAT WE CAN REFER TO IN THE FUTURE AS WE TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE PATTERNS THAT ARE QUIETLY UNWINDING AROUND US. |
Savannah creatures in open pen areas seem to pretty much be a standard for most zoos. Some have a wider selection of species than others, but you can pretty much always find zebra, giraffes, and probably a rhino. Interestingly enough the Philadelphia Zoo phased out their elephants.
Apparently under construction is an outdoor “Meerkat Maze” which I guess will be something like a giant Habi-trail for them to run around in.
Overall I found the Philadelphia Zoo a nice visit for an afternoon. Not so large that I felt rushed or that I was skipping things. And there are nice exhibits and a nice range of things to look at.
(Various “odd” captions are lyrics from the Simon and Garfunkel song “At the Zoo”. ;D )
Here is also a link to Lenny Flank’s diary on America's First Zoo, which covers the history and development of the Philadelphia Zoo in a bit more detail.
