In a move honoring the contribution of gay and lesbian Americans to this Country, President Obama will invoke the Antiquities Act for the 24th time in his presidency to create a national monument. Stonewall Inn in New York City was the site of riots in 1969 which is widely considered as the starting point for the gay rights movement in this country. the monument will be small (likely just a few acres in size), but it is the structures it is protecting( the bar and the vicinity around it) that is important, they are being conserved for their historical importance. this will be the 6th national monument in New York state, and the first monument in the country, honoring gay and lesbians. As with all monument designations, I strongly support this move. Well done, Mr President!
