Former President Jimmy Carter, U2 lead singer and cofounder of “One” the legendary Bono, and R&B/Funk artist/writer/producer/music icon Nile Rodgers came together Friday to do what each does best: wow audiences, raise money and promote peace. The trio joined forces for the
We Are Family Foundation. Nile Rodgers and his wife Nancy Hunt co-founded the foundation after the September 11 attacks to promote peace and cultural diversity around the world. Rodgers also wrote the hit, “We Are Family,” which was used to name the organization.
The former (and very honored) President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Award
for “waging peace, fighting disease and building hope” via The Carter Center. The award was named after Mattie J.T. Stepanek, an American poet who published seven bestselling books of poetry. He was known as "a poet, a peacemaker, and a philosopher." Mattie began his calling at the age of three and died at the age of 13 due to complications from Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy. Former President Carter remarked at the ceremony that Mattie was “the most remarkable person” he’d ever met.”
Bono was awarded the Humanitarian Award for his work with ONE and RED. The Irish singer/songwriter/philanthropist from the band U2 seemed smitten in the presence of Carter and mentioned how surprised he was when Carter quoted Bob Dylan in his speeches while running for president. Bono performed his songs like “Beautiful Day,” “Pride,” and “Mysterious Ways” for the attendees. Nile Rodgers also performed with his band Chic. Carter charmed everyone being … Jimmy Carter.
The event raised over $1 million with a guitar signed by the likes of Bono, Rodgers, and Lady Gaga auctioned off that brought in over $100k for the charity.
