The Old Navy ad depicting an interracial family modeling the chain’s clothing line of course triggered the racist trolls. (Thank you, Donald Trump, for your contribution spoken or unspoken.) Hear hate followed by love.
Twitter
Here is Culture Combat. He didn’t care for the ad:
Bye, Cultural Combat — I mean, Felicia.
And then there is Mary Whittier who believes that by shaming white women on social media, we can cause a change their behavior. I’d like to try that but I have a better idea. Instead of shaming with words, I’ll go to your Twitter page and report your hate speech. If you start to worry about losing your Twitter account, perhaps that will cause a change your behavior. What would you do without a social media platform to spew hate?
For a change of pace…
Jack McCain chimed in. The son of war hero, former GOP presidential candidate and U.S. Senator John McCain tweeted a photo of himself with his wife. ”To the people upset about the Old Navy Scandal of a picture of a mixed race marriage, eat it.” The tweet so far has gained over 6,000 retweets.
Democratic candidate for WI's 5th Congressional District Khary Penebaker tweets a photo of his colorful family. So there’s love on Twitter.
Facebook
And on the Old Navy Facebook Page, it seems more people flocked to not only express their views, but to also post hundreds of happy and proud interracial couples and families.
“Interracial couples are beautiful because of the blend of cultures. My boyfriend is Ecuadorian and I’m Italian-American. We are so happy! In his words, ‘White Genocide does not exist, and the race is arbitrary.’ Don’t let hate rain on your parade! “ <3
“This will always be on of my favorite pictures. I challenge anyone to see anything other than a mother and daughter who adore each other.”
“My mixed family.”
“Interracial families are just beautiful as any other family. Shame on those who are ignorant and racist. At the end of the day it should be about love — not skin color.”
“I’m Catholic, she’s Muslim (Veteran, Refugee). I have 4 mixed children from my previous relationship and one step-son. She’s Afghan and Im ‘Hispanic’ and we love the fact that OLD NAVY is always going against the grain when it comes to race relations. We will continue supporting and purchasing when it comes to clothes from the Old Navy Umbrella” #Veteran #LoveOldNavy #WeAreAllOneRace
“I can’t even fathom that people seriously have an issue ver this ad. This is America. I am so for my little family and am always excited to see interracial families in mainstream media. Go Old Navy!” #AdoptionIsAwesome
“Kudos, Old Navy for being awesome. It’s a shame some people pick some of the most beautiful things to be upset about. But look at this comments. So much love and support!”
“Thank you, Old Navy, for showing families similar to mine. Some of what wearing in this pic is from Old Navy :)”
“Thanks Old Navy for showing diversity in this ad & families like mine! May other companies follow your lead!”
“Biracial marriages have been around a lot longer than people think. This is a picture of my grandparents who were married August 5, 1905 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.”
”Thank you, Old Navy. Your support of mixed race families is beautiful, just like my family.” #LoveWins #OldNavyCustomerForLife
There are thousands more comments reflecting love over hate on the Old Navy Facebook Page. Kudos to the company for encouraging the conversation and proving once again that #LoveWins.
