Though no one dares use the E-word, the ‘Pub establishment is mumbling its “support” for their party’s new nominee. John McCain has announced he’ll “support” Mr. Trump. Sen. Ayotte says she plans to “support” the nominee. Mark Kirk’s another “supporter.” As of this afternoon, Roy Blunt’s still a “nominee supporter” but I’m sure he’ll learn to pronounce the candidate’s name soon.
And their pained, bitterly begrudged, soul-forfeiting “support” will do them not a damn bit of good. Because, as of current writing, those four GOP senators and others are still skipping the Republican convention in Cleveland. Because they fear being seen with Trump will hurt their re-election chances.
Exactly the kind of have-it-both-ways, Establishment weaseling the average Trump supporter hates. And will much note and long remember.
Might as well have saved a pretense of integrity, senators, for all the good will your “support” will buy you from Mr. Trump's actual supporters.
If you won’t be seen with their boy, don’t assume they’ll show up for you.
