This is just going to get better and betterer. Or more bizarre, depending on your POV:
Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney met privately with leading conservative columnist William Kristol this week to discuss how best to get an independent candidate into the presidential race.
The meeting on Thursday comes as anti-Donald Trump conservatives cling to hope that a viable third-party candidate could offer an alternative to the billionaire businessman and the likely Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton…
Kristol ... suggested that Romney should consider whether he "might be the candidate" -- although Kristol qualified the remark by saying he's not "actively working to get him to run."
Trump can’t pivot to Clinton because he’s got an internecine civil war raging on his right flank, and all of his troops are deployed in that particular engagement.
It’s early, I know, but it’s really starting to shape up as a GOP death cage match with Donald Trump. There will be a credible third party conservative challenge to Trump. You can almost count on that, particularly when two people like Romney and Kristol get together to plot logistics. There are a lot of these conversations taking place in GOP back offices.
The bottom line is that this scenario is creating a superb dynamic for down ticket Dems all across the country.
