An unnamed transgender woman, thought to be in her twenties or thirties, was walking along Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana, CA, at about 3am yesterday, when she was shot in the back by a man who she said was Hispanic, with a grey hat.
After sharing that much information, the victim declined to cooperate further with the investigation.
The report was taken, a preliminary investigation was conducted. However, given the information relayed by the victim, officers weren’t able to corroborate any of it.
--Cmdr. Jose Gonzalez, Santa Ana Police Department
After being shot, the victim walked to a gas station in the area, where an employee called 911.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where her injuries were reported to be not life threatening.
Gonzalez stated that there were officers in the area at the time of the shooting, but none heard any gunshots.
Why would the victim refuse to cooperate with investigators? There are many reasons, not the least of which might be the attitude expressed towards the victim by them. From what little information we have available here, one could surmise that the officers began with the attitude that the victim was being untruthful. If they managed to misgender her, they shouldn't be surprised that she stopped assisting them.
