A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
(It’s been a pretty rough couple of days, frankly, as I have been brutally reminded of...the hatred that exists in the world for people like myself, a hatred that I have seen with my own two eyes...)
Every now and again, I’ve contemplated doing a post on "six degrees of separation."
The topic came up in the comment section of last week's CUA post so I figured, why not?
There are several ways of doing the “six degrees” game, I suppose, as this 2008 Guardian article points out.
But yesterday researchers announced the theory was right - nearly. By studying billions of electronic messages, they worked out that any two strangers are, on average, distanced by precisely 6.6 degrees of separation. In other words, putting fractions to one side, you are linked by a string of seven or fewer acquaintances to Madonna, the Dalai Lama and the Queen. The news will come as no surprise to film buffs who for years have been playing the parlour game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, in which they link other actors to Bacon in six films or fewer.
Researchers at Microsoft studied records of 30 billion electronic conversations among 180 million people in various countries, according to the Washington Post. This was 'the first time a planetary-scale social network has been available,' they observed. The database covered all the Microsoft Messenger instant-messaging network in June 2006, equivalent to roughly half the world's instant-messaging traffic at that time.
To me, that seems like some totally creepy research that I don’t even want to contemplate, so I won’t.
We’ll simply do this version of the game by, say, “personal acquaintance” (which, to me, is a little bit more than simply meeting a person but the person doesn’t have to be a friend).
In last week’s post, I did say that a former boss of mine worked with President Obama on various issues in the 1990’s. I know that my former boss and PBO maintained personal contact over the years (on through the 2008 election, in fact), so I am three degrees from Madonna, the Dalai Lama, the Queen and that adorable red-headed grandson of the Queen, lol…
(Of course, there are many, many people that live in Chicago and Hawaii now that would probably have a quite interesting “six degrees” chain that goes through President Obama).
One morning in 2008, I was riding the bus to work in suburban Chicago and I was shocked to come across this article.
That woman was my great-great aunt; a relative that I have since learned had an enormous influence on my life that I was unaware of (and a woman who also the subject of this DK post.)
That “personal acquaintance” alone puts me three or four degrees away from some of the most famous and infamous men and women of the 20th century (frankly, this particular chain is one that I have the overwhelming tendency to be very modest about...still, it is interesting).
One more…
Between 1987-89 I worked for the House of Representatives under the “political patronage” of this man.
FTR, I worked in the House Post Office (but that’s a different story, altogether...). I did mail runs in all three of the House Office Buildings (Cannon, Longworth and Rayburn) as well as the Capitol but I was primarily responsible for collecting and distributing the mail in the Longworth Office Building and The Capitol.
Today’s question: What are some of the “six degrees of separation” chains that you know of in your own life? Which is the most interesting?

Oakland Readers of Daily Kos
There’s a city council meeting coming up in Oakland about a coal export terminal proposed at Oakland’s port. It’s a big environmental justice issue since the trains would go through the already-affected West Oakland. We need to stop this.
The Oakland City Council has called the special session to “conclude and present information from the public hearing on the health and safety impacts of coal in Oakland and options for action, including whether to adopt a prohibition on the storage, loading, import and export of coal in Oakland.”
Please RSVP there at NO COAL IN OAKLAND's website and also here at CUA to let other Kossacks know you're attending.

Koscadia, the readers of Daily Kos in Oregon, welcomed the newly transplanted asterkitty who recently moved from Philadelphia to Portland. Great Thai food was had by all.
The SFKossacks welcomed peregrine kate to town on May, 15, 2016. They all met for a picnic with one the most scenic locations in the Bay Area, the Marin Headlands. It was a beautiful sunny day, fun food and great company.
The Nashville KosKats brainstormed on April 30th at their meet-up and came up with the following places that might be good to register voters:
...farmers markets around town, YMCA’s, hipster coffee shops, college campuses, local book stores, craft and art fairs, city bus station, the VA, Senior Centers, clinic and hospitals, specialized street parties for all different kinds of groups of people, some that highlight pets.
This is what we all need to do now, before the general. REGISTER PEOPLE TO VOTE!
Silicon Valley Kos had a great event on April 30th. A representative from the Honda campaign attended and Jeevan Zutshi described a side of Mike Hondanot well known in that Honda is always eager to help new candidates and encouraging involvement. They also discussed ways they could work as a team to increase SVKos’s impact on local politics. Exactly what all Daily Kos In-Real-Life groups should be doing.
The SFKossacks welcomed RLMiller to San Francisco on April 2nd. Photo diary here. Stay tuned. RLMiller is the President of Climate Hawks Vote Political Action. She is the elected chair of California Democratic Party’s environmental caucus. Our dinner lasted four hours!
The Houston Area Kossacks had a small meetup with lively conversation on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Many more photos of the crew and ChrisLove’s great food pr0n can be seen here. Kosmail Chrislove if you’d like to join his group.
Northwestern Pennsylvania Kos
Northwestern Pennsylvania had dinner and lively political conversation on the evening of Thursday, March 17 at Latinos Restaurant in Erie, PA, in celebration of a visit from Chrislove who lives in Houston. Gizmo59’s recap can be read in full here, complete with succulent food pr0n.
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries about your event
or if you have changes or additions.
