Why we need a new “Progressive Party”
By Susan Maylone - Donati Daily
With the passing of the Omnibus budget months ago, we saw both the Republican and Democratic parties agreeing to provide major banks and corporations everything they wanted at the expense of the American people.
Citibank not only wrote the budget clause to weaken the Dodd-Frank Act, our government approved it. If you recall the Dodd-Frank Act was created to prevent Wall Street banks from reckless investment in derivatives, a practice that resulted in the tax payer bailout in 2008. Taxpayers are the ones who footed their gambling losses, workers lost jobs, homes and savings; yet in spite of that Wall Street banks have been given the green light to do it all over again.
Who is Congress working for? It certainly does not appear to be for the people in our country.
If you didn’t like the Supreme Courts ruling on “Citizens United” you won’t like the ten fold increase in campaign donations that was approved in the budget as well. Our country is truly for sale and on the bidding block. Where’s the democracy?
Our roads, infrastructures and schools are languishing, yet instead of providing the resources to repair and improve them, they gave 60% of the budget to the Department of Defense. It appears that Congress is more interested in funding wars than serving the citizens and improving our nation. It has become increasingly obvious that both parties are working for corporations and Wall Street.
Senator Bernie Sanders has been a strong advocate for the people, fighting for an agenda that works for everyone and not just big banks, the 1% and corporations to move our country forward, to reclaim our democracy and lift people up instead of silencing them by consistently and intentionally pushing them down as we’ve seen happen over and over again.
What we have witnessed during the recent primary elections is disconcerting, voters being left out through purging of voter registrations, reduced number of polling locations, long lines, not enough ballots, lost or uncounted ballots and the unrelenting power of the “Super Delegates” that supersede the voice of the people.
