I didn’t see it coming. We were talking about his Eagle project, and about the basement cleanout that I need to have done.
Certainly he’s flamboyant and musical, but he’s also into camping and building things and adores math. And as we talked today, he mentioned the guy he’d had a date with last week.
“Date, like romantic date or just friends?” I said.
“Friends for now, maybe more later. He and I talked about it. I’m bi. If I’m gonna have a relationship, I’ll have it with a girl, but I like guys too.”
“Well, your father and I are too.”
He wasn’t surprised. He’d already figured out Girlfriend isn’t just our roommate.
And he told me that none of this was stuff he was going to discuss with his grandmother. He had THAT much sense!
And then he went off to continue cutting down the poison ivy in the back yard.
It’s just who he is, it’s no big deal, it’s something that he’s clearly comfortable with. I’m so glad that we older queer folk who have worked towards equality are getting to see the upcoming generation having it easier figuring it out.
He’s 16. When I was 16, I never would have admitted to anyone I liked girls too. Least of all to my mom.
Wow.
