Wow:
Though some former Never Trump Republicans seem to be holding their nose and voting for the party's nominee despite their hesitations, for the granddaughter of one former GOP nominee, "Never Trump" means "I'm With Her."
In a Medium post published Thursday, Caroline McCain, the granddaughter of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), announced she would be voting for Hillary Clinton because of Trump's inflammatory statements about her grandfather and various groups.
Caroline McCain's post, titled "For This Republican, Never Trump Means 'I’m With Her'" outlined that reasoning for her decision and her many issues with Trump's rhetoric. She decried his comments in which Trump doubted if her grandfather was a war hero because he "liked people who don't get captured.”
Here’s a little more info:
McCain wrote that Trump never won her over during his candidacy, calling him a "misogynist," "racist" and "demagogue," citing his remarks on women and minorities throughout his campaign.
She said she decided to support Clinton during the Democratic National Convention this week, where Democratic heavy-hitters touched on themes of American exceptionalism in an effort to win over reticent Republicans.
"The party I grew up in, the party I want to work in and change and push to be more inclusive, betrayed me and countless others," McCain wrote.
"Loyalty to party can never trump loyalty to country. And loyalty to party means nothing when the party has been poisoned."
And here’s a key part from McCain’s article:
I wanted our nation to see what I saw, and to believe the best about my grandfather — to believe he was driven by service more than ambition, that his decisions were always made in view of a nation rather than of himself. To believe that any mistakes he had made were not intentional, and to believe that his compromise was faithfulness to, and not a betrayal of, his duty.
So I can, and should, do the same for Hillary. I (and you) don’t have to buy into a demonized portrait that has been painted of her for years. I can question her policy without questioning her character. I can criticize her past decisions, without reading corruption back into all of them. I can believe those closest to her when they say her faith is authentic, her character good, and her ambition animated by a heart of service.
I wanted a different candidate. I wanted a New American Century. I wanted an election with good ideas and good discourse. I wanted to win. But now I want my party to change. I want fresh leaders, of good character, in both parties. And I want Donald Trump to be humiliated in November and driven far from the political arena for the rest of his life.
So I’m not a Democrat — at least not yet. But this year, I’m With Her.
Well said. But McCain’s granddaughter’s timing could come at a worse time, especially since McCain’s been attacking his own opponent for being With Her:
Hillary Clinton's sliding polls numbers are giving Senate Republicans a new opening, as they plot a more aggressive strategy seeking to tie the party's presumptive nominee to Democratic challengers across the country.
The latest example: In Arizona, where Sen. John McCain is releasing a new ad Monday seeking to link Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick to Clinton's controversies. The ad, which was provided to CNN, shows a clip of FBI Director James Comey calling Clinton's handling of classified emails "extremely careless," followed by comments by Kirkpatrick saying she backs Clinton.
"She's served very well as secretary of state, and I'm a Hillary supporter," Kirkpatrick said in
the new ad, which was provided to CNN, and is part of a six-figure buy running statewide in Arizona this week.
So yeah, talk about bad timing. While I respect McCain’s granddaughter’s decision, her grandfather isn’t exactly backing away too much from Trump and he needs to be punished for that. Click here to donate and get involved with Ann Kirkpatrick’s (D. AZ) U.S. Senate campaign.
