Yesterday was eventful. I called on some help and a really good guy, Kirk, came and with his aid we got the dog run for Blue assembled. During that process we had some visitors – the kids from the house where Blue has been staying. Turns out the lady who abandoned Blue to die is the grandmother of one of the kids. Awkward. But the boy in question was just glad that blue was getting a new home. They left and we continued working and suddenly as I’m tying aluminum wires there is a small girl in front of me. I recognized here – she had been in the house when Blue’s owners were there.
“Hey mister Andy, I just want to thank you for taking care of my dog, Blue. I miss him but he needs a good home.”
Well, the sun must have got in my eyes suddenly cause they were all watery. I told her all about the plans for Blue and how he would have a happy life running with other dogs. This made her very happy.
Run complete, I went to get Blue. He was so pathetically happy to see me it was ridiculous. No problems getting him on the leash and leading him to the dog run where a big 4 gallon container of water and bowl full of food waited for him. I filled his new Kong toy full of treats and led him in. In no time he was settled down into his home. So I let my two dogs, Sunny and Luna, into the yard.
For two years Blue has been trying to get through the chain link fence to play with my girls. Now he was IN THEIR YARD WITH THEM and still separated!!! This will not stand!! He pushed HARD against the cheaply made dog run and the aluminum wires simply uncoiled. Blue was free!
It was not so fun for me and my girls. Luna and Sunny ran in panic hackles up, Blue tried to go two directions at once and I chased everybody round the yard. Finally my dogs retreated through the dog door and I snuck in with them and closed the dog door.
Blue has conquered the back yard.
One thing to make clear: Blue exhibited NO aggression in this entire process. All his behavior was play, play, play, please love me!!!
Later in the evening I went out and just sat and petted and scritched him which made him overjoyed. This boy is just lonely.
Vaccines, heartworm test, neutering are next. Will keep you updated on the Saga of Blue.
