Brookfield Zoo in the Chicago suburbs opened in 1934. Among the original collection of species was a Major Mitchells cockatoo by the name of Cookie. He had come from Australia and was determined to be about a year old. He lived at the zoo for the next 82 years, although he was removed from the exhibition in 2009 as he was too stressed by the daily activity of the zoo patrons. He is recognized as one of the longest living birds on record and was a full 51 years older than the next oldest cockatoo in a zoo. He fell ill over the weekend and had to be euthanized.
Goodbye Cookie, you were special.
