Good Afternoon HillPeeps! This diary is an afternoon hangout to discuss everything to do with the Clinton/Kaine campaign. We here are enthusiastic supporters (yes …. there is enthusiasm!) so we ask anyone who wishes to join the discussion to please be respectful!
Since it's Labor Day, I wanted to share some Labor Day trivia. Some you may know and some may surprise you!
- An Irish-American cabinet maker named Peter McGuire is known as the “father” of Labor Day. At a labor union meeting on May 18, 1882 he proposed that there be a festive day of parades to celebrate American industry. That celebration took place on September 5, 1882.
- In September of 1883, workers in New York staged a parade. Thousands participated under threat of losing their jobs because very few actually had the day off.
- On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland, though opposed to organized labor, signed a bill for a nationwide observance of a Labor Day holiday because of pressure from the voters. This bill established the holiday on the first Monday of September.
- Canada has been said to have actually originated the movement for a Labor Day holiday in 1872 in support of striking workers.
- The first state to celebrate the holiday officially was Oregon in 1887, seven years prior to the national bill being signed.
So … there you have it!
Today Senator Bernie Sanders will be campaigning in Lebanon, New Hampshire at Lebanon High School (doors open at 2:00pm) and on Tuesday Hillary will be at a rally in Tampa, Florida at the USF Student Recreation Center. Doors open at 11:45am.
I saw this cartoon on Twitter yesterday and posted it in diary comments. I decided to post it here for more people to see. It really depicts the GOP voters well when it comes to their disconnect from reality!
Now for a few tweets for fun:
Tee Hee!
I hope this starts a trend ….. shame the MSM (if that's even possible)
No one claimed Paul Ryan was the smartest guy …...
So let's have a fun afternoon of discussion! Hope you all have a great Labor Day!
