CDs
With the current stock market turmoil, it’s good to put your money in safe, insured CDs, especially………..Oh, wait, I meant to talk about the other kind of CDs, i.e. compact disks.
I had the desire to upgrade the speakers in my living room, hoping to get new ones that I could attach to the wall and replace the floor speakers which take up too much room. I checked out good brands at a stereo outlet and the the salesman said “oh, you want really good speakers” and he led me to an adjacent sekrit room. Several on the wall looked perfect, very small, and he assured me they were what I wanted. “Bring in your favorite CDs and you can decide.” This of course would be Sultans of Swing for loud music and Romeo and Juliet for delicate sounds.
I went home and checked the CD drawers. Not there. Multi-disc changers in the car and pool room. Not there. We have four built-in drawers under the stereo and I discovered they were in incredible turmoil; loose CDs, loose jackets, paperwork, cassettes!!!. After hours of searching I found the two CDs I was seeking, amongst the 27 Dire Straits and Knopfler CDs.
But I had opened Pandora’s Box. CDs I had never seen before, some sent as a result of political contributions, random classical disks, all the 60’s compilations, mood music, home-made disks with faint undecipherable markings, on and on, some forgotten treasures but mostly dreck. What was I thinking?
They are still littering the floor, awaiting decisions. Keep or toss? Would I ever play them? Who would even take them?
These disks are obsolete, as are the vinyl records stored in the basement (though I understand there might be a market for the latter.) What with streaming, YouTube, Sirius, iPods, Comcast MusicChoice, and who knows what all else, there are infinite other music choices. I still plan to take my two “found” CDs in tomorrow to check out the speakers.
How do y’all get your music fix? What is your media of choice? I know there are quite a number of folks here who just cut to the chase and make their own music. If I could, I would.
Changing the subject, I’ve seen a few disparaging comments lately about broccoli. Here’s my recipe for a salad that is far superior to what you get in the deli case.
Broccoli Salad
One or more broccoli heads, cut into tiny flowerets. Try to leave as little stem as possible
1/2 to 1 cup raisins (I always use yellow, as they are softer)
1/3 to 1/2 cup finely chopped purple onion
1/2 to 1 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
3/4 to 1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons wine vinegar
5 to 10 slices bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces, fried crisp.
In large bowl, combine broccoli, raisins, onion, and sunflower seeds.
In small bowl, combine mayo, sugar, and vinegar. Whip with whisk.
Pour over broccoli, toss to coat.
Refrigerate at least 2 hours.
Just before serving, sprinkle on bacon and toss. If bacon is cooked
ahead of time, warm in microwave. Bacon really makes this, so don't be stingy.
