I needed something light for today, so we’re going back to my music collection. Many years ago, a friend of mine who knew of my love for Metal/Rock, played me a cassette (yeah, that tells you how long ago it was). The music sounded … familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. Turns out it was this new group, Apocalyptica, playing covers of Metallica … with cellos! I was hooked.
The Unforgiven is the first song from them I heard (for some reason the official video has the tail end of another song in the beginning; actual cover of Unforgiven starts about 30 seconds in):
The Metallica version, for comparison:
Apocalyptica’s Master of Puppets:
and Metallica’s version:
Apocalypitca’s Welcome Home (Sanitarium):
And again Metallica:
Since Apocalyptica’s debut with their album of Metallica covers, they’ve gone on to release additional albums with their own original works, even recently adding a vocalist. I admit, however, that I’ve not really kept up with their music, so I can’t comment on how good the new material is. I have their first two albums, but between them there are only 3 original non-cover tracks.
Still, I find it interesting that Metallica’s music translates so well into cello; makes me appreciate that there’s real artistry behind the drums and the vocals and all. Has a new translation/iteration of a song or album ever given you additional insight into it?
As always, this is an OPEN THREAD and NOTHING is off topic. What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
