The following stories are examples of this week's Election Roundup of 37 down ticket stories covering Sunday 10/2 through Saturday 10/8.
(FL-Sen) Swing State Update- Hurricane Edition By BP01—I ust wanted to give a quick update on what I see happening on the ground here. I listen regularly to a few Spanish radio stations here in South Florida and I’ve been hearing commercials from Hillary, Rubio and Murphy. Murphy is doing his best to tie Rubio to Trump in all his ads. It’s unfortunate that Murphy doesn’t have better name recognition, but he’s certainly targeting the right audience. In 2010 Kendrick Meeks lacked name recognition but also was hurt by low mid-term election turnout and a political climate dominated by tea party freaks.
(AZ-01) Arizona GOP congressional candidate 'ritualized child abuse' at his school, says former prosecutor by Mother Mags Sheriff Babeu, a tough-on-immigration Arpaio wannabe is running for the congressional seat in District 1, his second try. His first attempt in 2012, when the frequent Fox News star also chaired Mitt Romney’s Arizona campaign, was upended when his former male lover, Jose Orozco, who was an undocumented immigrant, outed Babeu and shared his buffed selfie on gay dating sites.
(CA-Props) Analyzing California's 17 Propositions on the November 2016 Ballot by mainstreet52
There are seventeen propositions on the California ballot. The text, the arguments, and other such items are spread out over 233 glorious pages of the California Voter Guide. I suspect many people don’t have time to read 233 pages. I’m not a lawyer, and thus will not be able to detail the actual text. I will skim them for anything alarming, and I will try to summarize the 233 pages – and which propositions to support and be scared of, and why – in a single diary. Much more manageable.

Format and Tags
Writers can help the ER team by identifying the race in the title like this:
(NY-Sen) (FL-14) (GA-Gov). Using the "Elections" tag is also helpful and keep in mind that your first sentence or two is what we like to use in the description of your story when we can. This service is strictly for down ticket stories.
This edition of Election Roundup was made possible by the following: Carolina On My Mind, eeff, Jax Dem, Joieau, pittgreg, pucklady, and randallt. Special thanks to Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse for publicity.

(CA-Sen) Kamala Harris holds her ground for California Senate By preskin
Kamala Harris, a Democrat running for the Senate in California against fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez managed to respond well to ongoing assaults by Loretta Sanchez. It was bitter, it was acidic, it was difficult to hear the tone Sanchez inserted in her attacks on Harris. “Flying first class, on Trump’s private plane, up there with the fancy San Francisco socialites...” Sanchez ranted. Each question presented to Sanchez required the moderator interceding many times to have her stop speaking to honor the time agreement.

(IA-Sen) This week at progressive state blogs: Slippery slope of privatization; Grassley bails on debate By Meteor Blades
For the first time in his six re-election campaigns, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley is on the air with a second commercial criticizing his Democratic challenger. And in a move without precedent for a major-party candidate in Iowa, Grassley backed out of participating in a scheduled debate on Iowa Public Television, which would have been broadcast statewide.
(IN-Sen) Sleazeball Bayh busted by AP, hurts Dem Senate hopes in Indiana By Bob Johnson
Trump is toast, and he's likely to take a number of GOP Senate hopefuls with him. Joe Heck, the Republican candidate locked in a tight race in Nevada, was booed and heckled by the crowd when he said Trump should step down, a perfect illustration of the box a number of Republican Senate candidates find themselves in today.
(NC-SEN) If Sen. Richard Burr loses re-election, he would break a 60-year streak in American Senate races By Stephen Wolf
Two-term Republican Sen. Richard Burr faces the fight of his life in North Carolina against former Democratic state Rep. Deborah Ross. He leads her by just 45-42 in the Huffpost Pollster average, and both parties have recently begun heavily targeting the race. Hillary Clinton’s resilience in North Carolina and Burr’s reportedly lazy approach to campaigning even have Republicans worrying he might lose.
(NH-SEN) Sen. Kelly Ayotte-(Trump)'s Foot In Mouth Freudian Slip. "Trump Is Our Children's Role Model" By El Mito
Twitter explodes when the Senator tells an audience that Trump is a good role model for children. She tries to take it back. Yesterday was NH’s Senatorial Debate she had these perls of Wisdom “I think that certainly there are many role models that we have, and I believe he can serve as president,” she said of Donald J. Trump during a debate with her Democratic challenger, Gov. Maggie Hassan.
(NH-SEN) Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) Calls Racist, Misogynist Trump A Role Model for Children By Dartagnan
Kelly Ayotte thinks Donald Trump is a role model for children. And she made the foolish mistake of saying so out loud on Monday. After the Twitterverse exploded in response, she's trying to take it back.
(OH-Sen) Ted Strickland (D) Keeps On Pushing The Call To Expand Social Security By poopdogcomedy Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland’s (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign: I’ve talked with people in every corner of Ohio, and again and again, I've heard stories of friends and family lifted up by the sense of decency and security that Social Security provides. Right now, many seniors who have worked hard their entire life are struggling to make ends meet. The threat of falling home values and 401(k) packages means retirement security continues to be threatened. Social Security is a life-saving promise we’ve made to our seniors.
(OH-Sen) OHIO New Monmouth Clinton +2, Portman +15 By teacherken
As you can read here (and there is a link for the pdf of the poll at that site). The results are 44-42 Clinton in the four-way, and 54-39 for Portman. The last time Monmouth polled Ohio was mid-August, at which time Clinton lead by 4.
(PA-Sen) New Democratic ad features clip of Pat Toomey suggesting jail for doctors who perform abortions By Jeff Singer
Sometimes, an ad should do nothing but stand back and just show its target saying all the wrong things. The DSCC does just that, featuring clips of Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey proclaiming, “You know, I’d like to defund Planned Parenthood,” and “I would support legislation in Pennsylvania that would ban abortion, and I would suggest that we have penalties for doctors who perform them.”
(PA-Sen) Aggregating the Senate aggregators—Oct. 5, 2016 By Jeff Singer
What a difference a week makes! Last Wednesday, the New York Times was giving the Democrats only a 39% chance of retaking the Senate, though the forecasters used by the NYT Upshot averaged a a 53% chance for Democratic control.
(WI-SEN) National Republicans quit while they're behind and triage Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson by Jeff Singer
With Republican Sen. Ron Johnson continuing to trail Democrat Russ Feingold in the polls, national Republicans have just decided to wash their hands of this contest almost completely. The NRSC has canceled their entire $1.1 million TV reservation.
(Sen) This would be the new Democratic Senate MAJORITY By hpg
For month now I have waited for a clear democratic Senate majority. This is it, even with the loss of Nevada. A win in: Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, North Carolina only Nevada would be lost VERY GOOD NEWS !!!
(Sen) Time to pivot to the Senate By Rhett23
As I see it, most DKos read the same analysis I do and therefore know that HRC win probability is high. While that is reassuring, certainly now is not the time to let up lest Trump eke out a win based on some unforeseen circumstance. That said, There are other and equally important reasons to continue to press on with the same vigor and zeal as before the presidential debate when things were a bit darker, polling-wise. I refer to the Senate. And even, dream of dreams, perhaps if the stars truly align the House.

(AK-AL) Alaska Democrat reminds voters about Don Young's horrific 2014 comments on a teenager's suicide By Jeff Singer
GOP Rep Don Young, who has represented the entire state of Alaska since 1973, has the luxury of running for re-election in a state that Donald Trump is likely to carry next month. But Steve Lindbeck, a retired Alaska Public Media CEO, is Young’s strongest challenger in years, and he has the chance to remind voters why they were so disgusted with him two years ago.

(AZ-06) CSGOPOTD: David Schweikert- 2016 Update By republicinsanity
We spent this day in both 2014, as well as in 2015, here at “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day featuring profiles of David Schweikert, a former real estate vulture capitalist arch-conservative who consistently votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, defund Planned Parenthood, fails to understand how the debt ceiling works, referred to the 2013 Government Shutdown as “my idea of fun”, and was once recorded on video high-fiving Rep. Ben Quayle on the floor of the house after denying a pay increase to active duty soldiers fighting the War on Terror.

(CA-17) Updated: Exposing Ro Khanna's Creepy and Invasive Campaign #CA17 By Glen The Plumber
Democratic Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17) filed a lawsuit in Federal court accusing challenger Ro Khanna and his campaign manager, Brian Parvizshahi of stealing campaign donor data and using it to contact Mike Honda’s supporters. The data included donor information of over 10,000 contacts, as well as campaign notes and donors’ personal information. This data represents years of campaign research and strategy the Honda campaign called “invaluable.”
(CA-49) An Apple(gate) a day keeps the Issa away! By Murfster35
I’m not sure, but I think that Darrell Issa was they guy that football player was thinking of when he invented the “Icky Shuffle” touchdown dance. It would be perfectly appropriate, Issa is Icky to the nth degree.
(CT-04) Why would Jim Hines (Dem, CT-04) fund raise saying Trump is right? By kshrbkn
Minding my own business at work, when this email pops up...“Donald Trump is right… “Why would his campaign give credit to Trump for “identifying” that cybersecurity is an issue, especially in-light of the documented DNC hacker issues? He doesn’t actually think Trump was a forerunner in this regard?
(IA-04) So long "Cantaloupe calves" King. Hellooooo Kim Weaver! By Murfster35
It’s far past time to send Iowa’s Steve King back to the rocker on his front porch, yelling at kids to get out of the street, and growling at everybody darker than him that goes down the street. The man is a walking insult to human beings, and he’s been getting paid by us taxpayers in Congress for far too long to do it.
(NJ-05) Democratic poll shows ultra-conservative Rep. Scott Garrett trailing in New Jersey By Jeff Singer
Garin-Hart-Yang is out with a poll for House Majority PAC, and they give Democrat Josh Gottheimer a 48-41 lead over Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District. (OR-04) Peter DeFazio: A True Progressive Champion By truebluedonkey
Peter DeFazio is running for re-election in the 4th Congressional District of Oregon. He first ran for Congress in 1986. He is once again running against Tea Party whack-job and professional snake-oil salesman Art Robinson. Peter did not attend the DNC as a Super-delegate because he doesn’t believe in them. Representative DeFazio donates all his congressional pay-raises to a scholarship fund for southwestern Oregon Community College students. He has donated $338, 869 to 255 students.
(TX-02) CSGOPOTD: Ted Poe- 2016 Update By republicinsanity
Another in the excellent and ongoing series of Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day series. Ted Poe was a bad judge and how he's a worse Congressman. Read his history in this article. He is being opposed by Democrat Pat Bryan in this heavily GOP gerrymandered district.
(WA-05) Dear Cathy McMorris Rodgers-Anyone Who Would Endorse a Man Like That Does Not Deserve Another Term By peagreen
Cathy McMorris Rodgers said in the most recent debate -Thursday Oct 6. I will be voting for Donald Trump. I believe he will bring the positive disruption that we need to see in our government.” —Joe Pakootas had this to say last evening:
As a husband, father & grandparent I am appalled & sickened by the vulgar comments spoken by my opponent's presidential candidate Donald Trump about women today. Most Americans are outraged & disgusted by this sick behavior. However, last night my opponent again expressed her unwavering support for Mr. Trump. It is beyond time for my opponent to demonstrate some moral courage & put integrity above party politics. I call upon her to stand up for women as a Christian & a leader & condemn this reprehensible behavior. He is not fit to be president & anyone who endorses a man like that does not deserve another term in the United States House of Representatives. I will make you proud if you send me to Washington as your Congressman.
(House) The House Is Back in Play By steve schear
Back in August, when Hillary was riding high, Nancy Pelosi was urging progressive leaders to help take the House for the Dems. Those discussions receded when Trump crept closer before his debate debacle. Now Hillary is well up again and the House is ripe to be taken.

Hawaii: Three Young Democrats Face Incumbent Republicans By akt5131
Senator Bernie Sanders has often talked about the need for young people to get involved in the political process, and spoke heavily on a political revolution to shake up our government. On a national level, we have a lot of work, on a local level, we’ve hit the ground running. With the primaries behind us, the focus now is to push progress forward by electing Democrats and progressives down the ballot. With Hawaii being one of the most liberal states in the union, we pretty much got this in the bag, but even the most bluest of states have some red. Sean Quinlan, Stacelynn Eli, and Stanley Chang, are three young passionate Democrats running for local offices in the State of Hawaii this year, who were inspired to run because of their love of public service.

(US-Ad Roundup) Ad Roundup: The GOP defends Frank Guinta in the most generic way they can By Jeff Singer
IA-03: The NRCC’s new ad is titled “Syrians,” so you probably guess exactly what it’s about. The GOP argues that Democrat Jim Mowrer wants to allow in unscreened Syrian refugees, and also backs the Iran nuclear deal. IN-09: Democrat Shelli Yoder goes right for Republican Trey Hollingsworth’s weak spot. The spot features a clip of someone calling Hollingsworth “a carpetbagger,” before featuring a reporter describing how “Hollingsworth moved to Jeffersonville in September [of 2015] and declared his candidacy the next month." The narrator goes on to note that Hollingsworth’s wealthy father started a super PAC to help him win, before featuring another clip from a news how where a man agrees that there’s quite a bit of evidence that Hollingsworth moved from Tennessee to Indiana to run for Congress.

Registering Voters in Arizona--Part Two By Mercy Ormont
I was encouraged to write a sequel to the story of our voter registration efforts of two days ago. Here it is: This morning we took one of the helpful suggestions that was made after I reported our difficulties of last time. We went to a community college, specifically Mesa Community College, Red Mountain Branch. We unloaded our stuff and found what looked like a shaded area with chairs and tables. We sat there and waited, but although we saw people in the distance no one came close enough to accost. After a few minutes, a security guard lieutenant in full uniform showed up. I thought he was about to eject us, but no, he was there to give us a helpful hint: a better place to set up with more foot traffic. We moved, and found that he was right. In the next hour we registered five new voters, plus I had an interesting conversation with a young member of the staff who was challenging the whole idea that voting could do a person any good. Did I convince him? Who can tell?
