Donald Trump does have the capacity to link words together in ways that resemble the human language known as English. Asked about the Affordable Care Act, the Donald rambled about “defense” and even called something “a fraud,” which is rich coming from a man who is a fraud from his hair and skin down to every single business deal he’s ever been a part of. Trump tied it up by towing the Republican Party line—Obamacare must be repealed and we have no plan. Anderson Cooper asked Clinton to respond to Bill Clinton’s statement where he said that the ACA was broken and needed fixing. Hillary Clinton stepped forward and explained exactly why the ACA is a success and what we must do to improve it to reach its promise.
We are in a situation where if we were to start all over again, we might come up with a different system. We have an employer-based system where the vast majority of people get their health care. The affordable care act is meant to fill the gap between people who are too poor and put together many resources and namely people on Medicaid.
Obviously Medicare, which is a single-payer system that takes care of our elderly and does a great job doing it by the way, and all the people who were employed and people who were working and didn't have the money to afford insurance or anyone else to help them. That was the slot that the Obamacare approach was to take. Like I say, 20 million people have health insurance. If we rip it up and throw it away, what Donald is not telling you is we turn it back to the insurance companies the way it used to be. They get to do whatever they want including saying ‘look, I'm sorry, you have diabetes and you had cancer and your child had asthma, and you may not be able to have insurance because you can't afford it.’ Let's fix what's broken about it, but not throw it away and give it back to the insurance companies. That's not going to work.
Sit down, Donald. You’re at the big kids’ table now.
