Welcome to Connect! Unite! Act!
A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, you have something to say. Say anything, it will be well received. Join any of our communities at Daily Kos, just for camaraderie!
I had one of my marathon conversations with Mom a few nights ago.
(First of all, let me say that I am delighted that I have “marathon conversations” with my mother; it hasn’t always been like that. In fact, at one point in time, we didn’t even speak to one another).
During the course of the conversation, the subject of my father (her ex-husband and a man that I have not seen in ~45 years) came up.
Every so often, I get somewhat curious about that side of my heritage on my father’s side. For example, I know a good friend of mine whose father is from my father’s hometown...but the interest has never really been sustained.
As Mom and I were talking, I began to do some quick internet searching and found some stuff that I already knew but have never followed up on.
I know that my father had a (much) older sister.
My mother, for the first time that I can remember, happened to remember her married name…
I found out that my aunt passed on on November 4, 2008; I did read the obituary, which listed her two surviving sons, one of whom I called “Uncle” as a kid (my first cousin is not too much younger than my Mom, though)
I did a little more digging.
I think that I know who my “Uncle” is and where he lives.
My ancestors on my mother’s side are pretty well attested for; what I don’t know, someone can inform me.
My ancestors on my father’s side...a complete mystery...and that includes my Dad.
I have not made a decision as whether I will contact him or when I will do so. I mean, it has been ~45 years since have spoken to any of them.
I do know this…
I do like the thought that my aunt lived to see the Obama campaign and that there’s even a slim chance that she may have lived long enough to see the first African American elected President of the United States.
Today’s question: Do you like to do genealogical research? Any interesting surprises? Any reunions with “long-lost” or unknown relatives?
As always, this is an Open Thread!
