Of all the indecencies that Mr. Donald Trump is committing, his threat of challenging the legitimacy of the election if he is not declared the winner is perhaps the worst of all. This threat has nothing to do with Party affiliations and platforms, and everything to do with upholding American Constitutional values. Every sitting Congressperson, whether Republican or Democratic, should be alarmed by this flagrant attempt to undermine the people’s confidence in the fundamental fairness of the American election process. We should be telling our lawmakers in Washington how much we detest Trump’s tactics. Well, here is your chance to do so.
If you don’t already know who your United States Congressperson and Senators are, you can use this website to find out. Fill in your address and then click Search. It will show your own U.S. Representative and both of your state’s Senators. One by one, click on each of the respective links. At the top of the next page you will find a link to that person’s official Congressional web site. Once there, find the Contact link. Then you can copy and paste the letter that I wrote and have already sent to all three of my Congresspeople, or you can compose your own (keeping it polite, respectful, and to the point), and send it. Every Representative and every Senator needs to hear how we feel about a candidate for President who is really and truly fomenting rebellion if he does not win.

Dear Representative (or Senator) (name):
I am contacting you to register my concern at Donald Trump’s threats to deny the legitimacy of this election if he is not declared the winner. He and his supporters have provided ample instances of declaring that there is no way he can lose this election unless it is “stolen” from him. At the same time he repeatedly denounces the system as “rigged.” Such rhetoric undermines confidence in our election process by encouraging the belief among his followers that the results are not valid if Trump does not win. This creates a genuine risk that some of those followers may be emboldened to engage in acts of rebellion or even terrorism if their candidate is not declared the winner.
I ask you to publicly denounce this rebellious rhetoric. Regardless of your political party and your convictions about which policies are good or bad for the country, you must not sit idly by and allow the very foundation of American democracy to be corrupted in this way.
Sincerely,
(your name and address)
