I have the blues. The BF is currently in Las Vegas enjoying himself, while I’m currently stuck in Houston teaching freshmen about the New Deal (not that I don’t enjoy that...but Las Vegas). To make matters worse, I have been on the receiving end of a barrage of food porn from places that I really want to visit, such as Giada De Laurentiis’s restaurant at The Cromwell, Gordon Ramsay’s burger and fish-and-chips locations, and Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill. Basically, he’s going on a celebrity chef restaurant tour, and I’m extremely jealous.
I told him jokingly last night that he should just write my Top Comments diary tonight, since his life is so much more exciting than mine. Now, after lecturing for four hours this morning, I’m ready to collapse and am starting to think that wasn’t such a bad idea. The food porn he took certainly is quite mouthwatering, and I know there are people here who appreciate it. So here are some pics from the BF’s Las Vegas celebrity chef adventure, which I’m only vicariously part of. Now you can be tortured like I am.
First, Giada. I’m especially jealous of this one, because I was just listening to a Bon Appetit interview with Giada about the opening of this restaurant, and I decided it was on my bucket list. The overall assessment of the BF is that this place is very good both in food and presentation and is well worth checking out. From the website:
Italian food lovers can rejoice: Emmy Award-winning celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis has opened her first-ever restaurant, GIADA inside The Cromwell.
This charming Las Vegas restaurant welcomes diners with warm colors, comfortable furniture and natural lighting thanks to the restaurant’s huge retractable windows. Guests can eat in the dining room, lounge or on the outdoor patio, boasting breathtaking views of the Bellagio fountains and Caesars Palace.
The menu consists of Italian cuisine with refreshing, Californian influences. Menu items include lemon spaghetti, chicken cacciatore, marsala herb chicken meatballs, rosemary focaccia and lemon flatbread and vegetable Bolognese rigatoni. GIADA adds a lighter touch to her dishes, all while staying true to classic Italian recipes.
Only one pic from Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill...seafood cioppino:
He also stopped by Gordon Ramsay’s BurGR (this was actually his first food destination) and the appropriately named Fish & Chips. His experience was a little more mixed at BurGR; the burger was delicious, but he wasn’t a fan of the fries. You’ll see why. He had no complaints about Fish & Chips, which is apparently more relaxed and grab-and-go than BurGR.
So that’s the story of why I’m sitting around feeling sorry for myself this weekend. Meanwhile, I’m burying my sorrows in Tex-Mex takeout. Anyway, now on to what you’re here for, the tops...

From BeninSC:
I thought this comment (by first-time Daily Kos commenter, McMish) on Russian compromise of credit cards used to purchase items from the Republican national store was a fascinating one, and (if it is as accurate as it seems to be) one I hope gets diary (and news media!!!) attention.
I am submitting this comment from Demi Moaned (that I found thanks to a comment and nice suggestion by first-time Daily Kos commenter, Nellie Jones) because of the issue it mentions: some California ballots have as many as 40 propositions for voters to consider and vote on on the 2016 ballot! Whoa! To me, one of the most under-appreciated forms of voter suppression is precisely this type of ballot ‘bloat,’ that dramatically increases the time it takes to vote, meaning that voters must spend a disproportionate portion of their time waiting in line, missing work, obligating babysitters to stay longer, incurring additional expenses, just in order to vote. Consequently, some voters (and who really knows how many?!) get frustrated or overwhelmed and eventually have to give up their plan to vote, just to take care of life business. Why would a Democratic state participate in this form of voter abuse? I know why the red states do it.
From your diarist, Chrislove:
There were plenty of good comments in Greek Goddess’s incredible and terrifying diary Donald Trump is my ex-husband, but this breathtaking description of the abuser’s M.O. by kat herder stood out (it’s actually from yesterday, so not reccable, but still well worth reading).
