As I write these words on Sunday afternoon, we are just a few hours away from the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead. By this time this edition of Top Comments goes live, the answer to the question “Who did Negan kill?” will have been answered.
But first, a word from our sponsor:

Tonight’s feature presentation: The walking dead season 7 premiere
As season 6 ended, Rick Grimes and (most, not all of) his group of survivors had been captured by the just-introduced character Negan. Readers of the comic book series upon which the show is based were anticipating Negan’s appearance in the TV story line. Major characters often follow a similar path in both comics and TV, but this is not always the case. The show has taken several important twists and turns that played out differently from the print medium.
Negan, a particularly nasty villain, was known for carrying his favorite weapon, a baseball bat covered in barbed wire, that he named Lucille. As the last episode of season 6 faded to black, we heard the sounds of Lucille repeatedly striking someone in Rick’s group. The cliff-hanger that lasted through the summer months was: who was Negan’s victim? In the comic book, the character Glenn met his fateful and vicious end. Given the show’s history, it’s not at all certain that we will see the same character get killed off.
Producers of the show promised that that answer would be revealed in the very early moments of tonight’s gut-wrenching (they say) episode.
Security has been very tight around the script, and surprisingly few spoilers have been published for these last few months. This has not been easy on the actors, from a personal point of view. One of the main actors is apparently unemployed now, by his (or her) character having been killed by Negan in tonight’s episode. The problem for the entire cast and crew is that the season’s filming in Atlanta started last spring. The secret has been kept secure all this time. Cast members are strictly forbidden from revealing any details; this means they can’t tell even close family and friends if their job is over (having been killed), or not over (having not been killed). If you happen to be that actor, can you then go on to other employment opportunities without that simple fact giving away the big cliffhanger?
Just being out and about in public can become an issue. In May, actors Steven Yeun (Glenn) and Norman Reedus (Daryl) were riding their motorbikes together in Atlanta, when they happened to randomly come across the scene of a car crash. They both got off their bikes to see if assistance was needed at the scene.
The incident sparked a mini feeding frenzy at the time: If these two guys are both still in Atlanta, where the show is produced, does that mean they are both employed, and therefore have survived? Otherwise they might have left town already…
And so it goes.
Are you a fan of the show? Will you be watching tonight (or did you already watch) in real time to avoid stumbling across spoilers before you get a chance to see the show?
Please do not post spoilers here, as a courtesy to those who for whatever reason will be watching later on.
