Everybody, please calm down.
Hillary just won the popular vote, or “the vote” as it’s known in a democracy. Hands down, by over a million votes. And the Democrats gained seats in the Senate and the House.
We don’t need to reinvent the Democratic Party, as fun as that would be. Ironically, it’s our rigged system that wants the electoral college to award the presidency to the guy who lost, against the clear will of the American people. Sure, Hillary would have won if this were a real democracy without an electoral college. We can and should fight to alter the constitution to become an actual democracy. But the lower hanging fruit is simply to move to another state.
Hillary would have won this election if only a fraction of those who voted for her happened to live in a different town. Don’t move to Canada. Move to Madison, Wisconsin. Or Philly. Or Charlotte, or the Cleve. It’s a small price to pay to restore democracy to America. And it’s something you can actually do.
Short term, as you know, Hillary could still win in 2016 if some faithless electors honor the will of the American people. The electoral college votes December 19th. Trump just appointed a neo-Nazi as White House chief strategist. The corporate media wants to normalize this because riots are bad for business. But we need to pressure the electors NOW. They should at least see Trump’s tax returns before voting.
Long term, keep calm and spread out.
