From HuffPost:
In an attempt to move forward after their devastating election losses, a number of Democrats want to find common ground with President-elect Donald Trump, arguing that obstructing everything would not be wise. A smaller minority, meanwhile, are calling on Democrats to stand on principle and oppose anything Trump puts forward unless he renounces his ties to toxic advisers.
Why do our elected democratic representatives continue to do the same things over and over and over again that prove futile and negative to the party? I’m so fucking tired of this immediate acquiescence that follows every election we lose.
Like many of you, I KNEW THIS WOULD BE THE DEMOCRATIC TACTIC. And it’s always been dead wrong. Some good examples:
Our elected officials decided to work with George W. Bush when he came into office. Not buck him in public too harshly, always cowtow to the needs of the right at our expense, and approve bills and legislation that they NEVER would have approved or gone with had they had a majority.
What did it get them? Being called a “traitor” if they even consider opposing him after 9/11. Being painted as the reason government is not working for anyone, despite the fact that Republicans quietly opposed anything Democrats put forth.
Obama took office and decided he’d try to work with the GOP, despite their warnings that they would make him a one-term President and thwart him at every turn. What did it get us? A giant congressional and senate loss two years into his term, and now a minority in all three legislative branches — and the belief by many that the party of the poor and middle class has no interest in the poor and middle class.
Now, what do Republicans do when one of ours gets in office? Block him or her at every turn, refuse to govern, and blame it all on us as to why nothing gets done.
That tact, it appears, has benefited them hugely and put us in a spot we richly deserve for not fighting back just as dirty as they do.
But don’t expect any of that to change.
Republicans, in an attempt to appease the Trump wing of the party, will approve much of what Trump wants to do for fear of losing their job or having to deal with his wrath.
Democrats, instead of fighting for what a majority of Americans actually want, will fold to Republican bullying and give them far more than they every should get.
And our country will suffer for it.
And it will be their fault.
And it’s the same lame approach. And it never benefits us. And it has to stop. How do we get our elected representatives to finally, at long last, stop acting like two-pound weaklings in the face of a party that wants us obliterated?
