I’m so tired of people bashing those with a brain and an education as “smug.” The Founding Fathers were the smart guys who were looked up to by the masses — the people fed up with tyranny knew that they needed those with education and discernment to lead them. You didn’t have the villagers saying, “Let’s pick someone like us who doesn’t really know what’s going on other than it isn’t good.” They knew Jefferson and Hamilton and John Adams and Franklin were better suited to govern than they were.
Why, now, are well-educated, smart people vilified? Why are the warnings of scientists, military leaders, economists, and Constitutional scholars ignored in favor of a narcissistic, bombastic demagogue completely unqualified to lead this complicated country? How did we get to the point where this can happen?
You know, the myth that “anyone can grow up to be President” needs to be qualified: Anyone with the intelligence and motivation to be educated to the extent of understanding the vast responsibilities of the office could become President. I don’t want someone like me to be my President; I want someone smarter than I am. And, not to be overly modest, I’m pretty damn smart.
