With Paul Ryan’s plan to privatize Medicare and Social Security, I’m terrified.
My sister has suffered from a broken neck in 2 different accidents. Fortunately she didn’t suffer spinal cord injury but she does have fibromyalgia and some numbness. She’s permanently disabled and receives 1096 a month in disability payments and her Medicare. She also has sleep apnea so has the expense for that machine that is currently covered by her Medicare benefits that she receives through her provider, WellCare. She also receives 109/month in SNAP benefits.
In the second accident she was in, I was permanently injured as well and I’m now on disability, 1309/month and I use WellCare as well. Both of us have our premiums paid by Medicaid in the state we live in. I recieve $45 /month too much to receive SNAP benefits.
Out of that money we pay rent, utilities, gas, the difference for food for us and for our caretaker as neither of us can drive due to our injuries. We also have to scrap out of that money to replace clothing, glasses for my sister and me, and gas for the car. If we needed to make repairs, it would be catastrophic. As for dental, forget it. My sister and I both have lost most of our teeth and really need to get dentures or implants, neither of which we can afford.
We managed to get a washer and dryer but we still don’t have any living room or dining room furniture. Food and electricity is more important that furniture right now
If Ryan succeeds, I’m not sure where we’re going to be financially. I’d like to see him live on a bit more than $2400 a month for 3 people.
Yes, I’m terrified as to what will happen to us and to others that are in the same boat we are. It’s hard now; all I can see is bleakness in the future if he succeeds.
