Cory Booker is “ready to fight.” In an in-depth interview with Steve Scott of CBS New York, Booker spoke at length about how the 2016 election cycle affected him, his goals for the 2017 Senate term, and how he plans to address the myriad issues raised by the election’s startling and disheartening result. In a season of despair, Booker is a welcome beacon of hope.
Among the highlights:
Asked if he’d be working with the new administration on infrastructure, Booker stated that the Trump plan looked more like a bunch of handouts than an actual attempt to rebuild the nation’s roads and bridges. Booker has been working with New Jersey Gov. Christie and others on a plan that would initiate a long overdue upgrade to the train tunnels under the Hudson.
On the subject of Russian interference in the presidential campaign, Booker joined the call for a bipartisan select committee to fully investigate the matter: ”To think that the Russians are coming to our nation and trying to undermine our democracy should get every American upset.”
He decried the Trump campaign’s nonstop attacks on women and people of color, saying that he’d never seen a candidate “overtly demean and degrade” so many people on the path to the White House. Booker accused the president-elect of creating a climate of fear that had left many Americans needlessly fearful and demoralized.
Booker called on presidential electors to “vote their conscience” in cases where it’s legally permissible, saying that it’s their right within the dictates of our electoral system.
Booker called Trump’s use of Twitter troubling, terming him a “troll” who should “stay off” the social media platform, since he’s only using it to spread toxic hate speech and misinformation.
It’s a lengthy interview but well worth a watch. And 2020 can’t come soon enough…
