When Loudoun, Virginia waitress Kelly Carter finished serving a couple she was disheartened to see this racist note left on the check. Both Carter and the owner of the restaurant, Tommy Tellez, couldn’t believe it.
“I looked at the receipt three times,” said Kelly Carter, who said she served the couple Saturday morning, during brunch.
Carter and Tellez said there was no indication the couple was dissatisfied with the food or service during the visit.
A couple of outraged customers posted images of the check online after Carter’s response to the racist note led them to ask to see it. The story began to go viral and picked up more steam when the local Loudoun branch of the NAACP also posted the image online. According to Tellez, Ms. Carter has been receiving a ton of support from customers, with people asking specifically for her and leaving large tips. For her part, Ms. Carter seems like she is going to just continue doing what she does and won’t be giving dummies like that any second thoughts.
She said she would recognise them if they returned to Anita's New Mexico Style Cafe.
"My arms are still opened to him," she said, offering to serve them again.
"That's him, not me," she said during her morning shift, adding that "he only hurt himself. He only makes me stronger."
Racism is ignorance and it is violence and it is also pettiness.
