We had snow on Sunday. It isn’t that uncommon, it can happen two or three times a winter, even this far south (northwestern SC). The area has a little bit of equipment for dealing with snowy weather, though it can’t be compared to areas where it is a fact of life throughout the winter.
I visited a good friend in Boston some years ago. It snowed 8 inches over night, stopped about 7 am. By 8 am the roads were dry. Not JUST clear. Dry. Perfectly fine for driving. By 10 am the sidewalks had all been plowed with little sidewalk-sized plows! Here, if the weather is cold enough for snow to hang around a few days the time will NEVER come when the sidewalks are plowed. People may shovel them, but they won’t be plowed. Sidewalk plows exist, but not here.
The last time we had a deep snow that stayed for a week or so it took four days before a plow came to my neighborhood. My street has a turn and a fairly steep hill at both ends, with lots of wintertime shade, so it is one of the more difficult residential roads to escape.
My brother-in-law lives and was raised in Salt Lake City, so snow has been a constant in his winters from earliest childhood. He and my sister visited one winter when snow was forecast. I had told him the way it was: when they mention the ’s’ word on the radio, people slam on the brakes and swerve into a ditch. They landed at the airport, rented a car. Not a single flake had yet fallen, but the ’s’ word was flying in every radio broadcast. There, before they got OFF the airport property, was a car in the ditch. He couldn’t believe it.
The picture at the top is of the Bell Tower, on a little spit of land in the campus lake at Furman University. Paris Mountain is in the background. I don’t know who took the picture, someone posted it on FB, and possibly to a local news site. But it shows some of the natural beauty of the area, and how pretty things can be cloaked in white.
Not very political tonight, but perhaps a little respite from the challenges of the day to day.

From voracious:
This comment from 714day in my diary about Sanders inspiring voters to get involved locally needs to be seen by more people.
From BeninSC:
I am submitting this comment from Ice Blue, from Mopshell’s Moondai Furbutts diary today, because of how eloquently it captures the real life challenges so many of us face on a regular basis. We wish you the best, Ice Blue. Also note how quickly and selflessly, bfitzinAR steps up with an offer of real help! Great spirit, bfitz! Please come to TC and let us know if something materializes with this!
And who would have thought?! An apptastic approach to coping during this next four years! From this thread in Barbara Morrill’s fine Front Page diary on Meryl Streep’s magical takedown of Drumpf! The lead-in comment is from Colorado is the Shiznit, in reply to dmhlt 66. Also worthwhile, low in the thread, is this comment from Aquest, to try to explain some of Conway’s bizarre take on things.
Highlighted by ellpeecee:
Is this comment by justagurlinseattle, lamenting the role even the liberal media plays in ongoing attacks on Hillary Clinton, making the smear campaign that much easier for the GOP.
