We have to look to how we move forward and reform the Democratic party to deal with D Trump. Bernie has shown us that we have to hold him accountable for the promises he made to the American People. First and foremost we must hole him to his promise not to cut Social Security and Medicare.
The same issues that allowed Trump to outflank Clinton to the left, are the same ones that we must hold him accountable. Bernie has identified several issues that we must press him on. We must press him through is supporters on a multitude of issues. “Drain the swamps” and the ethics board is just the first. We must work with him to stop the outsourcing of jobs. We must work with him to redefine our priorities on trade deals. We must seriously look at trade tariffs as a way or making trade more fair and raising revenues (I would rather pay more for imported boxer briefs than have more take out of my paycheck). Most importantly we have to chose to oppose him when he supports the hard right (pence agenda). His first and longest (and most decisive victory) was against the republican establishment, we should remind him of this. We should co-opt his need for popular approval to move him toward more constructive policies.
If we oppose him in the same blind way that the republicans opposed Obama we will only push him into the arms of the hard right wing. In doing so we can not compromise on social justice. We will pick our fights. In the fights we pick, we must be able to win, or be able to take to the voter and explain in two sentences or less.
We must make clear that we can work with him on areas or progress, but we will not compromise on core social issues. We will not sacrifice, civil rights, voter rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ issues, immigrant rights, criminal justice reform (black lives matter), or religious tolerance.
if we pick our fights, we can make this a better country.
