The administration is now backing off somewhat from the ban, but by no means is it going away. The details really don’t matter, however, because that there is any thing even close to a ban remaining is still too much. It’s still not o.k. Just say no.
How this is happening, however, is worth noting. This is a classic negotiator's technique and the President thinks he can apply it with impunity, just as he has throughout his career. Simply, you start the negotiation at the extreme, because you can. If you get your opening extreme offer - great. If not, you know that you'll be fine with something less, and so you step back a little. This lets the other side think they are getting something.
In #loserdonnie's case, throughout his career, this technique has been applied to an even further extreme. He is used to being able to walk away if he fails to get what he wants. His life of absolute privilege and ivory towers has afforded him the luxury of no fear of a failed negotiation - beyond asking, "what's next?", that is.
Some people voted for the President exactly because of this supposed skill at negotiation. The truth is this "skill," like so much of his success and the man, himself, is built on lies and inherited advantage. It's always been just a game to him, with no real consequences about which to be afraid. I doubt that anyone thought he would be using this 'skill' on us, in this way, and so transparently. I guarantee that we will see this modus operandi again and again and again. And please note — this kind of carelessness, recklessness, whatever you want to call it, does not work when it affects 325 million people.
Relatedly, for Senator (and current Attorney General appointee) Jeff Sessions, and Stephen Miller (formerly Session's communications director and now Senior White House Advisor), immigration — and in particular that of Muslims and the paranoia-induced threats that they perceive that arise because of it — has been a pet issue for years. In all likelihood, they drove this executive order home. As the cited article states — it’s a natural progression given their new work address.
More reasons why Sen. Sessions should not, under any circumstances, be confirmed as Attorney General.
Update — turns out that the Rudy Gulini was also involved in this mess (why is that not surprising?). The President asked hizzoner to find a way to make his “Muslim ban” legal, Rudy recruited some folks to help, and this was the result. Awesome.
